Carl Bernstein says Republicans are Considering Trump ‘Unfit to be the President’

The administration running under President Donald Trump seems to be turning its back towards him, after some unforeseen decisions he took in past few days. On Sunday, a Watergate reporter Carl Bernstein said that the Republicans are coming to a “much greater consensus” that Trump is unfit to be the president.

The statement came in reference to the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis, which raised intense opposition among both Democrats and Republicans.

Appearing on CNN’s “Reliable Sources”, Carl Bernstein said that the concern of GOP is that Trump is “unfit on psychological grounds” as well as unfit “because of his contempt for the law” and because of his “conduct of foreign policy.”

The reporter said that the resignation letter from Mattis has pushed “Republicans into making some real judgments,” in a monumental manner. “They’re talking to each other, there is coming to be a much greater consensus that he is unfit to be the President of the United States,” he said.

Last week, the President took a couple of decisions that created a massive turmoil within the White House. First, Trump announced to pull out the US troops in Syria, a decision he took without any deliberations with the senior advisers and the Pentagon officials.

Besides, it was later announced that Trump is also planning to withdraw half of the total American troops in Afghanistan, bringing them down to just 7,000.

Following these decisions, Mattis resigned last week from his position as the Secretary of Defense. He wrote a resignation letter to the President, saying that he deserves “a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours.”

Mattis also expressed concerns over the views of President on traditional US alliances.

“While the US remains the indispensable nation in the free world, we cannot protect our interests or serve that role effectively without maintaining strong alliances and showing respect to those allies,” he wrote in his resignation letter.

The Trump administration has expressed a strong disagreement against the President regarding both his decisions, where he didn’t value his advisers as well as the defense officials. The Republican senates had also signed a letter against his decision, calling it a “premature and costly mistake.”

While the Democrats were already in defiance of the President, the Republicans also seem to have turned against him, considering the statement by Carl Bernstein. Chances are bleak that Trump would resurface as the Presidential face in the next Presidential elections in 2020, as per the ongoing negative wave.
