Amid the continuous climate changes, former vice president Joe Biden is expected to reveal new plans to mitigate these threats in a few days.
The 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful has proclaimed his approach towards environmental record in Congress and the White House for a long time and people have anticipated that he might take a strong position against excessive use of fossil fuels.
As environment remains an important area of concern for the voters, the social reformers who believed that the government could become a tool for bringing changes in the society considered Biden’s approach to resolve the climate changes as outdated.
The Climate Activists largely believe that the 2020 presidential elections would be one tough competition for the nominees, as they would have to win over the voters by bringing in policies that are more appropriate and making stronger commitments.
Joe Biden’s plan to mitigate climate change threats largely includes keeping the US in 2015 Paris Climate Agreement and reversing the Trump administration’s current environmental rules with that of Obama-era. Many have criticized the proposal, saying that resolving the issue would require much more efforts.
Thinking that Biden’s plan would take a middle-of-the-road approach, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blamed him saying that the increasing climate risks provide no “middle ground for climate denial & delay”.
In the past, Ocasio-Cortez had also introduced the Green New Deal to address climatic changes with the aim of converting the US electric grid to 100 percent renewable energy.
Joe Biden completely denied Ocasio-Cortez’s arguments saying that he was the first one to legislate a climate change bill in 1986 during Reagan’s administration.
“What I fought for in 1986 is more important than ever — climate change is an existential threat. Now, Today,” Biden tweeted in early May.
The climate activists have argued that although the climate change legislation has been into effect since 1986, but no appropriate steps have been taken to combat with environmental changes, giving rise to threats on public’s health. Mitch Jones, another climate and energy program director at Food and Water Watch, said that the current circumstances really show that Joe Biden’s approach has not changed over the time, but “the problem has continued to get worse, and what needs to be done has only become more ambitious.”
Many other environmentalists and liberal voters concluded that Biden’s way of advancing in the climate field might not stop the increasing global warming. The 2018 Climate Change report suggested that there has been an urgent need to stop the current rate of carbon emissions to avoid facing the irreversible damage in future.
Though Joe Biden’s supporters believe that his climate change policies have evolved, the other representatives have been eagerly waiting for the day when his policies would be revealed. His role in the climate change might largely influence his position in the upcoming presidential elections.
