July 4th Celebrations: President Praises Country’s Unity and Armed Forces

July 4th

Recalling the significance of July 4th, President Donald Trump on Thursday delivered a speech at the “Salute to America” event, which was held at the Lincoln Memorial in National Mall on the occasion of Independence Day celebration. Multiple flyovers involving US Navy’s Blue Angels and music highlighted his speech.

The evident military tanks standing near the venue during the event made it look like a military celebration apparent to that of the Bastille Day, which is the national day of France and is celebrated on July 14. President Trump, while attending the occasion during a 2017 trip to Paris, desired similar celebrations for America.

Striking a patriotic tone on July 4th, the President started his speech by recognizing every branch of US military including “the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Marines, and, very soon, the Space Force”. Trump said that military was an important part of the US and together they would “someday soon plant the American flag on Mars”.

Throughout the July 4th event, the President was surrounded by his supporters and Pentagon officials, while he spoke for about 45 minutes, praising the patriots. Trump said, “That same American spirit that emboldened our founders has kept us strong throughout our history.”

“To this day that spirit runs through the veins of every American patriot. It lives on in each and every one of you here today,” he added.

Describing the US forces’ willpower and highlighting their courageous attitude, Trump continued, “It is the spirit, daring and defiance, excellence and adventure, courage and confidence, loyalty and love that built this country into the most exceptional nation in the history of the world, and our nation is stronger today than it ever was before. It is its strongest now.”

The Democrats criticized the installation of heavy military and equipments in the area on July 4th, calling it irrelevant and highlighting the damage that could be caused to the local infrastructure.

It was revealed that the National Park Service (NPS) had redirected $2.5 million from its overall budget to help pay for the July 4th event and the factoring of military equipment and security would further increase the cost. The funding facts brought in concerns from many leaders, who called it inappropriate to be used for the event.

Hours before the speech both pro- and anti-Trump activists surrounded the National Mall for hours, with the group Code Pink, which is an internationally active NGO favoring and criticizing him for the day’s event.

The strength that comes with the unity in American spirit became the theme for the July 4th event. Remembering the relevance of the auspicious day, Trump ended his speech by denoting the crowd saying, “As we gather this evening in the joy of freedom, we remember that we all share a truly extraordinary heritage. Together, we are part of one of the greatest stories ever told — the story of America.”
