Border security has become one of the major national concerns lately. However, the crisis that occurred while trying to restrain the migrants have turned out to be worse. In an attempt of setting off illegal migrants from America, the authorities have also created certain circumstances that are irreversible.
It was recently identified that 471 parents were separated from their children without a chance of reuniting, as they were deported from the States. The figures were revealed hours after the Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen’s testimony before Congress, on Wednesday.
Appearing before the House Homeland Security Committee, she claimed of being unaware about any adult migrants being deported without their children. As per her statements, they were offered several chances to take their kids along.
Kirstjen Nielsen stated that they ensure to “ask them if they’d like to take their children with them” before deporting “any alien after they have gone through the process and receive a final order of removal”. She added that these migrants are questioned again by “their consulate or embassy” regarding whether they “would you like to be removed with your children as you’re removed”.
Saying this, the Secretary of homeland Security concluded, “So there was no parent who has been deported, to my knowledge, without multiple opportunities to take their children with them.”
The American Civil Liberties Union tweeted in response to the testimony, writing that Nielsen “should reread the stories of parents who signed deportation forms they couldn’t read, believing it would bring their kids back.”
After the record of such incidents was revealed, Nielsen was accused of lying to Congress under oath. Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) called her claims “a lie”. She also said, “Lying to Congress under oath is a felony. The last person who did that is going to prison.”
Kirstjen Nielsen in her first hearing also insisted that the cages used by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to detain migrants and asylum-seeking children aren’t actually cages. Calling them “areas of the border facility”, she explained that these spaces “are carved out for the safety and protection of those who remain there while they’re being processed”.
However, the House Homeland Security Committee Chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) looked unimpressed, as she responded, “Don’t mislead the committee.”
Senator Dick Durbin accused Nielsen of separation of families and of hiding facts from the Americans. He stated, “She must resign.”
Considering the mounting border security issues in the United States, it still seems uncertain that how far the Mexico border issue would stretch.
