Immigration, the biggest threat to the Unites States, according to President Donald Trump has reached a “breaking point”, state the US officials at Mexico border. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan confirmed that it is “a matter of time” before something tragic happens inside one of their facilities.
In El Paso, Texas, officials confirmed that 13,000 migrants were at hand in their detention facility this week, further claiming that the number is “unprecedented”. (BBC)
“On Monday and Tuesday, CBP started the day with over 12,000 migrants in our custody,” McAleenan said at a news conference on Wednesday. “As of this morning, that number was 13,400. A high number for us is 4,000. A crisis level is 6,000. 13,000 is unprecedented,” he added.
The bigger problem with the increasing number of migrants is that they mostly constitute of families, making it impossible for the officials to repatriate them.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) following such conditions confirmed that they do not possess the facility to keep families and children.
McAleenan said his agency expects 40,000 children to enter CBP custody in March. “We are doing everything we can to simply avoid a tragedy in a CBP facility,” he added. “But with these numbers, with the types of illnesses we’re seeing…I fear that it’s just a matter of time.”
The challenge at the border is that there is no clear way that migrants can be stopped from entering the US border, allowing them to claim asylum from anywhere around the world.
Trump’s obsession with the border wall, for which he even shut the government down and called national emergency, hasn’t also helped much. This is because the wall can’t be built on the Rio Grande river; the actual border separating the US and Mexico.
The growing chaos at the border, has now led to the agency redirecting 750 agents from their responsibilities at the port of legal entry to instead support the “humanitarian mission”. The agency also confirmed that it has asked for help from other federal agencies, including the National Guard and Department of Defence to increase the capacity to process migrants.
Besides, a group of migrants quoted as “the mother of all caravans” is reportedly being formed in Honduras, as per the Mexican news outlet El Economista, and is expected to bring as many as 20,000 to the border in coming days.
Therefore, with the increasing number of people approaching the US in the hope of seeking asylum, the arrangements at the border need immediate moderation. Also, the US law on immigration must be molded, to handle such unprecedented rise in their numbers.
