The relations between the United States and Iran have strained since President Donald Trump pulled out his nation from the nuclear deal with Tehran in May 2018. Besides, Iran has been indirectly threatening the US of nuclear attacks. Moreover, the ballistic missile test by Tehran conducted last month was also considered a conventional threat.
In November, Iran Deputy Defense Minister General Qassem Taqizadeh told the Iranian state media that Tehran was planning to launch three vehicles into space in “the coming months”.
Considering the relations with Iran, the US warned Tehran of launching satellites into space. On Thursday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued the pre-emptive warning against Iran for carrying out space vehicle launches and missile tests.
Pompeo said that the planned three rocket launches would violate a UN Security Council resolution, as they use ballistic missile technology.
Under the UN-backed nuclear deal, Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed by Iran and leading global powers — the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany — in 2015, Tehran is forbidden to test ballistic missile.
In a statement, Pompeo said, “The United States will not stand by and watch the Iranian regime’s destructive policies place international stability and security at risk.”
“We advise the regime to reconsider these provocative launches and cease all activities related to ballistic missiles in order to avoid deeper economic and diplomatic isolation,” Pompeo added.
However, Tehran rejected the US allegations that its space program is connected to its nuclear ambitions, and said that they did not violate a UN resolution.
On Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on Twitter, “Iran’s launch of space vehicles — & missile tests — are NOT in violation of [U.N. Security Council Resolution] 2231.”
While Iran is denying the allegations, USA is prone to the nuclear attacks from Iran. The US intelligence agents have also stated that the space launch technology can easily be converted into nuclear weapons use.
Pompeo’s fears that the Space Launch Vehicles incorporate technology similar to that used in intercontinental ballistic missiles, has raised tensions for the United States. Will the US warnings work on Tehran?
